1
Children are _____
TA: a Great Heritage
JJ: an absolute wonder

2
Children want ____
TA:  love, attention and to have their way
JJ: affection, attention and fun

The introductions:
Jumoke Justine Joseph works as the proprietress of Great Mother's Joy Nursery and Primary School located in Satellite Town, Lagos.

She attended St. Mary's (on Broad Street, Lagos) for primary school, went on to Queen's College Lagos for secondary school, and then to the University of Lagos where she earned a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Mathematics and Statistics.
Ms. Jumoke Joseph
Her areas of expertise include business management and facilities management from her previous career, as she worked at The British Deputy High Commission BDHC Estates Group, Lagos from 1998-2011 and CIACO Nigeria Limited, Ikoyi, Lagos from 2012-2015.   She also has expertise and has taken courses in child development, classroom teaching, communication, and elocution.

Jumoke Joseph's mother is the famous and spectacularly sweet "Aunty Mrs. Joseph"or "Teacher Anna", who raised thousands of us little ones as a nursery and primary teacher at St. Mary's Private School.  I remember learning some of my first skills from her - addition and subtraction, nursery rhymes, Catholic hymns and prayers, with some reading and writing and other classroom skills ... I was four years old.

Teacher Anna was born on 18th January 1943, the seventh among thirteen children.  She started her primary school education at Our Lady's School, Kaduna, and proceeded to Lagos after the demise of her mother Mrs. Victoria Saba in 1955. While in Lagos, she attended St Mathias and then St Mary's Modern School.

She commenced her teaching career in 1962 under the tutelage of Reverend Sisters at St Mary's Private School, Broad Street.  Between 1975 and 1978, she proceeded to African Church Teachers Training College, Ifako Lagos. She eventually retired from St Mary's in 1989 after 27years of service.
Teacher Anna Joseph
Mrs Joseph taught for another 10 years (1989-1999) as Head of Nursery Section at the Learningfield School, Satellite Town, Lagos. She then proceeded to McLilies Primary School, Satellite Town where she worked for another 2 years till 2001. In 2001, she established 'Mother's Joy Day Care Centre and managed this until her daughter came on board as proprietress in 2015.

What do you do on weekends?
TA: Saturdays – resting, reading, parties and catching up with the News.
Sundays – generally church and home front.

These days I serve at the same parish on the Board of Catechists and Marriage Counsellors and I am a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.  On the home front, I live with my husband Mr. Suru Joseph and love spending time with family including Jumoke and Oladipupo.
JJ: Saturdays of leisure – resting, reading, parties.
Sundays – Church and eating out

Favourite colours:
TA: Green and sometimes White - Green is a cool colour that reminds me of nature
JJ: Red, Gold and in recent times White
... because Red is bold and cheerful, Gold is regal, and White – c’est très chic!!

Equality and the example of Iceland

How long will it take to close the global gender gap?

Very interesting.
....

The Global Gender Gap Report 2017 has recently been released, courtesy of WEF - the World Economic Forum. Some highlights:

The world is very far from gender parity in politics and $$ , but closer to gender parity in health and education.
http://reports.weforum.org/global-gender-gap-report-2017/results-and-analysis/

No country in the world has fully closed its gender gap, but four out of the five Nordic countries and, for the first time this year, one country each from the Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and Eastern Europe and Central Asia regions—Rwanda, Nicaragua and Slovenia—have closed more than 80% of theirs.
Yemen, the lowest-ranking country, has closed slightly less than 52% of its gender gap.

http://reports.weforum.org/global-gender-gap-report-2017/dataexplorer/
Nigeria is not in the top 100.

What is the secret to Iceland’s success? What are the lessons learned? In short, it is that gender equality does not come about of its own accord.  Read: This is why Iceland ranks first for gender equality

Experienced and unemployed?

Youth unemployment has been with us for a while, but consider that even for "grown-up-adults" (who in many cases have tasted of the fruit of nicely-paid employment) the struggle is getting quite real  😎  No, really it's not funny.  😅

Ageism is a thing.  Trust California to take it to the extreme.
“We Want People Who Have Their Best Work Ahead of Them, Not Behind Them.”
Well, ok, that's just more business for this cosmetic surgeon: A few months ago, a 26-year-old came in seeking hair transplants to ward off his looming baldness. I told him I wouldn’t let him. His hair pattern isn’t even established...  Ok, that was funny.

http://www.businessinsider.com/stressful-lives-of-older-tech-workers-2015-11?IR=T
2015 chart showing median employee age at leading US companies
Here are gripping battle-stories, mostly told by older workers and entrepreneurs.  They speak of the need to constantly upgrade skills, they speak of overwork, of workplace culture and sometimes faking the young-people behaviours to fit in, of the possibilities of exiting the race... I suppose many of them can become successful entrepreneurs

On the policy-level too, we should be thinking about how to apply all the abilities of all the people, and in particular, how to apply the accumulated wisdom of older workers, that is, how to 'turn grey into gold'.

Technology Today

Ubiquitous, mobile supercomputing  . Artificially-intelligent robots  . Self-driving cars  . Neuro-technological brain enhancements  . Genetic editing  .  .  . 21st-century stuff . . .

in the light of which the constant drama of Nigerian (African?) society, the stuff of our daily news for instance, must appear supremely daft and irrelevant.  Yaba would save us, but that dream too may be dying.

If you have a ray of hope to share, put it in the comments.

What is inflation?

It shouldn't be too high, it also should not be too low.  1, 2, 3 % is very ok, it means that the price of something you buy today may be doubled after about 25 years or more.
Inflation rate in the G20 nations mid-2017
Source: tradingeconomics.com

But let's say it's around 10% or 15%, that means that your money is being watered down very fast because things you buy for 1000naira now, try again in about 5 years and the price is about 2000naira.

Nigeria's inflation rate is now around 16 percent.
It was far worse in the military regime more than 20 years ago when inflation exceeded 40%.
It was tamed to below 10% recently until it started to rise again about two years ago.

I'm a writer.  I can't really deal with 'the business side.'  Many artists face the same: need to focus on their craft and find an external solution to the need for sales, marketing, and things to do with making money.  That's what this really fabulous and short MuddyColors.com article is about:

Photo by @mattiasklumofficial for @natgeo Deadly encounter... Not really... People frequently explain to me that I have a dangerous job. Working close to elephants, tigers, polar bears, leopards, lions, sharks, illegal logging operations and venomous snakes such as this beauty. In my line of work doing serious research and reading nature well is key! It'll get my closer to my subjects and it has so far kept me alive! During a @natgeo assignment in the republic of Congo I managed, with kind assistance from Samuel, (my camera assistant at the time) and Zoltan (a great herpethologist), to close in on this beautiful and highly venomous banded water cobra! It resulted in a series of unique images of this rarely seen species. Go to @mattiasklumofficial if you want see some "result-pictures". Sahara Reporters' Latest: How El-Rufai’s Wife, Children, Kaduna State Government Officials Shared N3billion Contracts

Despite ceaselessly advertising himself as an apostle of due process and transparency, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, SaharaReporters has found, runs an opaque contract award system in his state. Documents exclusively obtained by SR show that the lack of transparency in contract awards is characterized by blunt refusal to advertise bids, as required by the Procurement Act; contract splitting, cornering of contracts through fronts-by members of El-Rufai’s family, cronies and officials of his government.

The big potential of Recommender Systems

Can you think of more applications for software recommender algorithms?

When you read a blog post or digital news item, it sometimes gives you a selection of related news items, designed to keep you enjoying the service on that site.  Amazon famously designed the "you may also like" marketing feature that in part contributed to making their site so useful and 'sticky'.  It's not like recommending is anything new: the other day I ordered snacks or food and the check-out staff asked if I would like a drink to go with it - human recommender :)

Reading today about related work in progress, this time to assist doctors in caring for patients:
“I thought about how the Amazon product-recommender algorithm works and thought, `Can we do this for medical decision-making?’” said the 34-year-old Chen, a VA Medical Informatics Fellow at Stanford Health Policy.
So instead of, other people who bought this book also liked this book, how about: Other doctors who ordered this CT scan also ordered this medication.
“What if there was that kind of algorithm available to me at the point of care?” he asked. “It doesn’t tell me the right or wrong answer, but I bet this would be really informative and help me make better decisions for my patients.”
Again, can you think of more opportunities?  In education, in training?  In hiring, in business?  In events, in design, in government?  Anything?

Where do you want to go today?

Taking time in. A few old university friends and I touched base recently and told me, "You're doing what you said you wanted to do." Now, I don't recall having much clarity on life during my university days but I was pretty steadfast in wanting to travel. Had no plan/idea on how to but I kept that goal in mind. 5 years ago, I said I'll never work a regular 9-5 again and would clock in 20 hour weekends just to beat that and have free days during the week lol. About 3 years ago, I told myself that I needed to travel to a new country at least once year, which I did and now I've found myself in 5 countries since January. Then I told myself I needed to live long-term in at least two different countries before I'm 30 (one down). It does take action to move with life, but no, it doesn't have to be meticulously planned out all the time so don't worry, you're the only one who doesn't have everything mapped out. The urge to be on the move is so ingrained that it's almost second nature to navigate and find opportunities towards just that. Does that make sense? There's no plan B to not finding accomplishments for the goals I set myself. #noforreal #ilegitdonthaveaplan #abudhabi #uae #travelnoire
