Funny but True US visa news

More Training for Foreign Students
Immigration officials said they were extending the duration of on-the-job training for immigrant students who are recent graduates with advanced degrees in science, technology and engineering. The training period will be extended to 29 months from 12 months for immigrants on student visas employed in jobs related to their field of study. Training will also be automatically extended for students who are waiting to shift to temporary work visas known as H-1B. The measure, which officials said would benefit about 25,000 students, is designed to close visa gaps that had forced some highly skilled graduates to leave the country.

And the Brain Drain continues. Brilliant foreign students coupled with the SERIOUS lack of interest (thanks to the Idiot Box culture; being smart is "stupid" mentality; etc.) by American high school students in Maths & Sciences is only going to increase this pattern. All I hope is that said students realize a duty to their native countries in terms of helping the motherland ascend both economically and socially. Otherwise, the motherland will never truly realize her true potential.

Come to think of it, most of the TAs I saw in the Engineering and Science departments at a lot of universities in Canada were either of Middle Eastern (Arab, Persian), Asian or African origin. The invasion has begun! :-)

It's good for the world that the bureaucracy was so bad as to send many graduates and techies back home.

We agree that America tends to have its kids focus on the top end of the capitalism food chain (the dealmaking, not the technical skill) so that the business of science and technology is left to recent immigrants or foreigners.

The lame part is that they refused to "show the love" to these highly trained people, and I always advised friends to go home as you say, even if it was only for their own personal gain.

Personal benefits include: not dealing with visa crap for the next ten years, having some status befitting their superhuman hardwork as opposed to trying for years to score a faculty job, and making an impact by solving the bigger problems not just the artificial problems common in research life.

More important than all this is the fact that their expertise is more desperately needed elsewhere (true for Chinese and Africans, Eastern and Western Europeans, and almost everyone in between) making me wish for them to not all work in one country but to spread the wealth.
